All About First Lutheran Church, Lake City, MN

Nestled between the bluffs of the Mississippi River Valley, along the shores of Lake Pepin, is the city of Lake City. In a residential area there is a small white wooden church with a Swedish ancestry and a warm, friendly congregation established in 1869. We have more than 135 years of ministry behind us. In September of 2005 we moved into our new building, and now we find ourselves in a new setting. We are closer to the bluffs and located on a main highway (US 63), but we are still a warm, friendly congregation. We invite you to come and worship with us and share in our warmth - a warmth that is generated through the love of our Lord.

First Lutheran Church is an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America with a wonderful staff and outstanding and inspirational programs and activities to help you feel alive in God's Kingdom. Feel free to check out this whole website for more about us. You are cordially invited to worship with us and to contact us.

Choirs Many talented vocalists and instrumentalists combine their talents in various choirs and ensembles. The Senior Choir, under the direction of Melinda Berkeland, appears regularly throughout the year and has performed such challenging pieces as Handel's Messiah and John Rutter's Requiem. The Junior and Cherub Choirs, under the direction of Deb Hanson, bring smiles to the congregation's faces whenever they perform. The Praise Choir leads music during the Saturday evening worship, approximately three Saturdays a month. All high school students and adults are invited to participate.

TV Broadcast Our 9:00 am Sunday service is taped and later broadcast via local cable channel 18 every Sunday evening at 5:30PM, Monday morning at 11:00AM, Tuesday morning at 9:30AM, Thursday afternoon at 4:00PM, and Friday evening at 8:00PM.

Confirmation The confirmation program at First Lutheran Church begins in Grade 7 and continues through Grade 9. Our goal is to connect the “head and the heart” by teaching students the basics of Luther's Small Catechism, a Bible overview, and how these relate to every day life.

Visitation Ministry Our commitment at First Lutheran to sharing the love of Jesus Christ is possibly most evident through this group. Their ministry includes visitation of those that are ill, in nursing homes, homebound, or in need of a congregational “hug” for support during a time of trial. This group includes a card ministry, shawl ministry, a prayer chain, a quilting group, and pastoral and lay visits and follow-up.

Sunday School Christian Education is a priority at First Lutheran. We believe that it is vitally important to equip our children with the Word of God – to write it on their hearts and in their minds. Sunday School is held weekly from September through May on Sunday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for 4-year-olds through 6th grade. Each grade has a volunteer teacher. Our curriculum is lectionary-based in order to give a comprehensive Biblical base to the students. It also allows families to “connect” when lectionary texts are used in the worship service.

Vacation Bible School VBS is held for one week during the summer for children age 4 - 5th grade. This exciting and fun children's ministry is carried out by volunteers of First Lutheran. This year, Vacation Bible School is August 4 - 8. All youth from 3 years old to 5th grade are encouraged to attend.

Adult Education There are adult education opportunities for all ages at First Lutheran. We have Bible Study groups that meet monthly on Thursday mornings, Thursday afternoons, and Monday evenings. We also have an adult forum that meets weekly during the school year on Sunday after worship services for Biblical and topical.
